Accent walls are the job Pearland floor plans were built for. Great rooms in Shadow Creek Ranch, Silverlake, and the newer sections of Manvel and Iowa Colony have one wall opposite the sofa and a lot of painted drywall everywhere else. A mural or a large-scale pattern on that wall changes the room. A mural hung an inch off across panels ruins it in a way a small floral does not.
Layout before paste
Panel murals are a picture broken into strips. The image has to land where the eye lands: centered on the seating, clear of the light switch if we can move the composition, and complete at the ceiling. Ten- and twelve-foot walls are common in these communities. A mural scaled for an eight-foot sample board will crop the subject or leave a blank band. Measure the wall, including the base and the crown, and buy the panel count the width actually needs. Overlap and match marks eat inches.
Outlets and returns for TVs are the other constraint. Cutting a face out of the middle of a scenic mural is sometimes unavoidable. It should be a decision you see on a diagram, not a surprise at noon.
Accent walls that are not murals
Large-scale prints, tone-on-tone textures, and a single run of grasscloth are the same layout problem with more forgiveness. The start line is still plumb. The first strip is still placed so the pattern does not die awkwardly at the corner. On an open plan, the accent wall’s edges are visible from the kitchen. Crooked seams read from across the room.
Prep still applies
A mural will show orange peel more clearly than a busy small print, because your eye is looking at the picture. Smooth and prime first. If the wall was an accent color painted last month, it needs to cure. Then we hang. Installation method follows the product: many modern murals are non-woven paste-the-wall; some scenic papers still book.
